Questions

1. We will be moving to Fort Bragg in the next month or so. I have a high school student, which is the best high school to send my child?

The majority of our volunteers live within Cumberland County, and are typically very pleased with the Cumberland County School System.  CCS has schools with choice programs that provide opportunities for students who already have a career interest.  Some examples of programs include Finance, Information Technology, Health Sciences, Arts, Math/Science and Engineering.

The Jack Britt School district is one of the most popular in the area, and has been recognized as an NC School of Excellence.  Graduates in 2008 earned the highest total scholarship dollars of area high schools.

However, there are several other high schools in the county that are academically strong and provide a great learning environment.

For information on school reports and statistics, visit http://www.ncpublicschools.org/data/reports/.

2. I have a daughter who is interested in transferring to a community college in Fayetteville. Can you provide more information on local college's in the community?

Fayetteville actually has a very acredited community college - Fayetteville Technical Community College . Top passing rate in almost all medical certifications. Admissions should be able to provide guidance on transfer; registration for fall classes runs until Aug 6.

Other Fayetteville colleges are Fayetteville State University and  Methodist University, which too offer many educational opportunities.

I hope this information will help in making a smooth transition for your daughter.

3. What are the best school districts?

The districts that have Jack Britt, Terry Sanford or Southview are all desirable. For some good info on the schools and their performance, please visit here.

6. I am looking for a pre-k school for my 2 year old. Granted she isn't 4, but will be four while we are living in the area. So my question is, in which school district is the best place to live to get my child into a "better" pre-k school?

I can think of so many but I feel I could be a great resource for you to contact.  I work for the partnership for children of Cumberland county and our main focus is early childhood education, including a free preschool for four year olds.  If you would like to contact me via email as it is a large amount of information for me to type up

Each child is special and has special needs or talents that only the parent knows or understands.  In order to find the “right” school for your child, I would recommend you contact the schools listed on the following website and interview them based on what you want for your child.  http://www.ccs.k12.nc.us/PreKInfo.htm

The NC Law that is enforced can be found at http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2009/Bills/House/PDF/H2v10.pdf
The local issues on smoking ordinances have to be addressed with the local inspections or health department of the municipality the establishment will be located.

No smoking allowed in public buildings except certain types of bars likes cigar bars.
 North Carolina
Statewide ban on smoking in bars, restaurants, and some other workplaces: On January 2, 2010, after being signed into law by Governor Bev Perdue on May 19, 2009, North Carolina Session Law 2009-27 went into effect, banning smoking statewide in all bars and restaurants in North Carolina, as well as in government buildings and vehicles.[222] The Law exempts cigar bars, private clubs (including country clubs), designated hotel/motel smoking areas, and medical research facilities studying tobacco.[222] The Law generally allows local governments to regulate smoking more strictly beginning July 5, 2009 (as long as it is approved by the county, too), but preempts local governments from regulating smoking in cigar bars, retail tobacco shops, tobacco manufacturer facilities, designated hotel/motel smoking rooms, private clubs (including country clubs), theatrical productions involving smoking, private residences, or private vehicles.[222]
Other statewide smoking regulation in North Carolina:
North Carolina Department of Correction, January 2006, banned in all state prisons.[223]
UNC Hospitals, August 2007, banned on all hospital grounds.[224]
The University of North Carolina system, January 2008, banned on all university grounds except 100 feet from any school building
