Fayetteville Wants You

MILITARY HERITAGE

You only have to look at our community names to see we have a rich military heritage. Fayetteville is named after a famous general of the Revolutionary War: the Marquis de Lafayette. Cumberland County also bears the name of another famous military man. The Duke of Cumberland was the first to dispatch British soldiers to North America to defend the colonies against the French and Indians.

As the unofficial home of the U.S. military, there are few communities in the world who can compete with the military history and tradition of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. From key Revolutionary War battles through the Civil War to deployment of troops to Afghanistan and Iraq today, it is here the very seeds of American freedom, democracy and patriotism were planted and continue to grow.
